Renovation of an apartment in the De Angeli district of Milan.

“A formal and geometric harmony defines this space. The central perspective is dominated by a circle that both divides and visually frames the environment.

Custom-made furnishings, such as the bookshelf and the fabric-clad wardrobe, complete the project.

It is an apartment where artworks take center stage. The verticality of the space is emphasized by the arch of the shower door, while the flooring acts as a material base for the bespoke furniture elements.”

Conversion of a 1870s neoclassical townhouse in Bruges, formerly used as offices for the Provincial Ombudsman, into a contemporary residence.

The closed roof structure of the former attic was opened with a more accentuated dormer window which houses the bathroom and also provides fascinating views and light into the master bedroom.

The existing enclosed stairwell was extended with a perforated green staircase up to the top floor. In order bring daylight deep into the core of the house, a rooflight was incorporated in the ridge of the stairwell, and all unnecessary walls around it were removed. The first floor was opened up as much as possible, the authentic staircase was made visible and a void was created interacting with the ground floor to create a sunlit living space with views of the new green roof.

The executed beams in the main volume also refer to the original room division typical of a town house from 1870. Conceptually, there was a need to open up existing room structures to the maximum, as well as demolish rear building volumes.

The aspect of reusing and repurposing the existing main volume is already one of the pillars of sustainability and material conservation. As does the maximum on-site creation and realization of structural elements.

Palazzo Citterio . Milan, Italy

“Palazzo Citterio, also known as Palazzo Furstemberg, is an elegant 18th-century mansion located at Via Brera, in the heart of Milan.

Acquired by the state in 1972, the palace was to become the centerpiece of the “Grande Brera,” a visionary project conceived by Franco Russoli, then director of the Brera Art Gallery.

Due to the spatial continuity between the Brera and Citterio palaces through the latter’s garden and botanical garden, it presented itself as an ideal candidate to solve the space problems of the Brera Picture Gallery and its offices.

The transformation path of Palazzo Citterio has been long and complex. After its acquisition in 1972, several restoration and redevelopment projects followed.”

KAGA . ArtA’A arts center is the cultural center of the municipality of Aalter.

“Located within a larger development of assisted living units and apartments, it’s an arts center housing a library, academy, and cultural hub. As the shell volume extends two levels underground, several light wells were introduced to bring in daylight and, thanks to their strategic placement, to create spatial dynamism and interaction within the arts center.

Rather than closed-off rooms, the design promotes visual connections between all art forms and functions, stimulating both users and visitors. A restrained color palette is adopted, with carefully selected accents and focal points. The library shelving, for instance, is finished in an oriental yellow tone and, on level -1, reads as a room within the larger space. The children’s library, also accessible via a slide from the entrance hall, is entirely dedicated to young users. A central patio on level -1, surrounded by the main circulation and visible throughout the building, forms a multifunctional area that can serve as a reading garden, performance space, or play area.

The music academy is located on level +1, with particular attention given to acoustic requirements, especially due to the presence of assisted living units above.”
